EVLT

What is EVLT?

EVLT means Endovenous Laser Treatment. This procedure is currently considered the Gold Standard of treatment for varicose veins. It is much more comfortable than the old stripping technique and is therefore performed under local tumescent anesthesia in outpatient clinics. Patients walk right away, typically return to work within a day or two and have significantly less bruising and faster healing.

How is it done?

EVLT procedure is done by inserting a thin laser fiber into the affected vein. This is an ultrasound guided procedure, which means your doctor can see where the laser fiber is all the time. This increases the safety and efficiency of the procedure. The treatment is carried out under local tumescent anesthesia and it takes about one hour per leg to be performed. Most patients do not require a driver to take them home after.

What are the post procedure instructions?

  • Wear compression stockings for 48 hours continuously, then for 2 weeks during the active hours. The stockings have to cover the entire treated leg – thigh high style or pantyhose (knee-high won’t work). We measure your legs, then prescribe and order the compression stockings that will fit you best, so they will be ready for you the day of the procedure. If you have health benefits they will often cover the cost of compression stockings.
  • Refrain from flying or long car rides for 2- 4 weeks following the treatment
  • Refrain from any weight lifting or cardio workouts for 5-7 days
  • Walking helps – we encourage you to walk throughout the days following the procedure.

How Soon After The Treatment Will I See The Results?

Immediately after the procedure you’ll feel tender and might develop bruising. It takes about 3 weeks to start to see results but your legs will continue to improve for the next 6-12 weeks.

Can I Go To Work The Following Day?

You will have limited downtime and can return to normal activities the next day. We advise NO heavy lifting, strenuous activities, workouts or running for one week.

Do I have to come back for a follow up?

You will return for an ultrasound 2 weeks after the EVLT and, another one, as well as a follow up with your surgeon 8 weeks after the procedure. Further appointments will be booked as required by each particular patient.

Is It Painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you will feel tiny pin-pricks as this is administered. Most people feel some pressure, but no severe or intolerable pain. After the procedure you will feel tender and bruised for a couple of weeks. Some people develop more intense tenderness. Sometimes wearing your compression stockings for longer than the recommended 2 weeks will help.
