Sclerotherapy

How is it done?

Sclerotherapy is done in our office and it does not require anesthesia. Your doctor/ nurse will ask you to lie down on the treatment bed. Your skin will be cleaned  with a sterilizing solution and then the practitioner will inject a solution into the affected veins.

How long does the treatment last?

Depending on the area that we are covering, it could be anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

What are the post procedure instructions?

It is a good idea to wear compression stockings for 48 hours following the treatment. Your stocking should be at least 20-30mmHg and thigh-high style. You will be asked to refrain from any strenuous leg workout during the first 2 days following the treatment. You can, however, walk as much as you want. You are also advised to avoid exposure to hot showers, hot tubs, saunas or baths for 48 hours.

How soon after the treatment will I see the results?

You can expect some bruising immediately after the treatment. Bruising is a normal reaction and can last from a few days to a few weeks following the treatment. The appearance of the veins will continue to improve for the following 8-12 weeks.

Is it painful?

Normally this procedure doesn’t hurt.

Can I go to work the following day?

Absolutely! You can go back to work right after the treatment.

**Not all patients with spider veins would get the same results from injection sclerotherapy. If the ultrasound results show a significant underlying problem, your surgeon will probably opt out of sclerotherapy and suggest a different treatment solution. During the initial assessment we will recommend the type of procedure (or sometimes a combination of treatments) that is going to work specifically for your vein anatomy.
